Mythical Bird Bowl
Item: MYTH-02

This is a traditional design that has been slightly modified.  The ancient piece this was fashioned after was a pipe bowl.   It was completely hand built.  It was fired outside in a traditional wood fireing.  Variations in the wood firing atmosphere resulted in a variation of shades of gray to black on this bowl, known as fire clouds, adding to the uniqueness of this bowl.

Original artifacts similar to this bowl would have been made between about 1000-1400 AD during the Mississippian period.

During the Mississippian period a large number of naturalistic or ‘real world’ effigies were made.   Classic Southeastern Cultural Complex art was believed to relate almost entirely to otherworldly events and supernatural actors, however, the art from the central Mississippi valley also includes a large variety of ‘real world’ beings such as fish, deer. Shells, gourds, and other animals.  These were depicted with a varying degree of realism.

Size: From the tip of the birds tail to the V shape tip of the rim opposite is 8.25 inches the diameter of the bowl itself is 5.25 inches.  The bowl is 3.5 inches tall to the rim on the sides.  6.25 inches to the top of the birds 'ears'.
